The Kawasaki Ki-48, 九九式双発軽爆撃機 'Sokei', Army Type 99 Twin-engined Light Bomber, was a Japanese twin-engine light bomber that was used during World War II. Its Allied reporting name was " Lily ". The Kawasaki Ki-48 Army Type 99 Twin-engined Light Bomber (Lily) was a fast but under-armed light bomber that performed well over China in 1940 but proved to be vulnerable when faced with more modern Allied fighters. The Kawasaki Ki-48 proved itself a serviceable twin-engine light bomber mount for the Japanese military of World War 2 (1939-1940). The Ki-48 Sokei (Lily) was a twin-engined mid-wing light bomber of the Japanese air force introduced in 1940 as a replacement for the Ki-32, over which it was a significant improvement. Kawasaki Ki-48 LILY 1939 Imperial Japanese Army aircraft confronted by the Soviet-built Tupolev SB-2 bomber, providing support for the Chinese during 1937, were rudely surprised by its capability, its maximum speed being such that Japanese army fighter aircraft were virtually unable to intercept it. The Ki-48 was also used as a dive-bomber, a role in which it was reasonably successful. The Ki-48 began to enter service with light bomber sentai in China through 1940.
