The deepest gold mine in the world is Mponeng, a 2.5-mile hole in the ground in South Africa. A whole underground city—lightless and lawless—lives inside the mine. Mponeng is one of South Africa’s deepest mines, with virgin rock temperatures reaching up to 54.5˚C at 3.5 km below surface. For miners to be able to work at acceptable temperatures, the ambient air has to be cooled down to 28˚C Wetbulb temperature.

2013-12-03 This is the Mponeng Gold mine, and it is one of the three Western Deep Levels mines of the West Wits gold field which is currently the West Witts Operations owned by AngloGold Ashanti. The first known organisms that live totally independently of the sun were discovered deep in this mine, see the details at bottom of article. There is also a picture attached the shows the organism.
This ultra-deep level mine has an operating depth of over 4km (the equivalent of 10 Empire State buildings staked one on top of the other). Mponeng Mine is a deep level underground gold mine operating between 3,160m and 3,740m below mine datum (BMD*) and is currently the deepest mine in the world with development at 3,841m BMD. Future mining is planned to deepen the shaft bottom to 4,227m BMD.
The Mponeng mine contains the world’s loneliest ecosystem, where the rod-shaped bacterium Desulforudis audaxviator lives alone in the dark.
